Merry Xmas 1G!

Wishing all of 1G and their families a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

See you back in 2018 for another year of hard work and fun!

Year 1 Christmas party 2017

I think the children well and truly deserved this party! They behaved so well and were such good sports in all the games!
They have worked so hard in Year 1 so far and I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching each and every one of them.
Parents, you should be super proud of them all!

What else have we been doing this week?

We have been experimenting with different mechanisms on moving pictures all term. For their final pieces, the children could choose which mechanism they wanted to use on which picture to make a moving image for the story of Christmas.

In Geography this term, the children have been exploring the UK. For this lesson, they had to identify ordnance survey map symbols on printed maps of the UK capital cities. We then discussed what the cities had in common. Can the children tell me below what symbols they found in each city?

After all their work on the UK, the children had to produce and information text about one of the 4 countries in the UK. They had iPads to help them research extra facts and they were able to tell me lots of interesting things about their chosen country. Children can you remember any facts to tell your families?

At the end of a long and busy term, we finally found some free time to relax and read in our fabulous library and also listen to a nice Christmas story too!

Year 1 Christmas craft afternoon 12/12/17

We had a lovely, festive afternoon in school with the help of our wonderful volunteer parents and grandparents making lots of Christmas themed crafts including our cards, calendars, letters to Santa and many, many more!

A big thank you to those who attended, we hope you enjoyed it as much as the children did!

Superstars of the weeks! 7th, 14th ad 21st of December!

This superstar was chosen for consistently being a sensible, hardworking pupil who has recently improved his presentation skills.

This superstar was chosen for super listening and soaking up information to produce an excellent information text about Northern Ireland.

This superstar was chosen because he is a good friend to others, offering his support and generally being kind and thoughtful.

What else have we been up to this week?

In maths we have begun to study 'Time'. The children have been singing the days of the week and months of the year songs below to help them remember them in the correct order.

In the pictures below, the children had to work in teams in a competition to order the months of the year the quickest! Yellow team won by doing this in 30 seconds! Fantastic teamwork!

In DT, the children made rotating pictures using a wheel mechanism.

Maths Shape day 7/12/17

On Maths day, the children were involved in lots of practical shape tasks. One of them was to make pictures out of a set of shapes (a bit like a jigsaw) called 'Tangrams'. The children brought their 7 tangram pieces home in a little bag and using the pictures below, they could practice arranging them to make different pictures.

Using a key, the children had to identify and colour shapes to reveal Christmassy coloured pictures.

The children also had to choose a 3d shape to practice their wrapping skills on before sorting them into shape piles. They enjoyed this task!

Friday 1st December Elf Run

We had a great time on Friday afternoon joining in with the Elf Run in order to raise donations for a very worthy cause, a local children's hospice called Brian House.
The children joined in with a variety of festive themed sporty activities including stocking throwing, present chasing, cracker relays and reindeer skipping!

Thank you very much for your kind donations - the children had great fun!

Our Kindness Elf

For the duration of December, we have our kindness elf visiting us. Each day, there will be a new kindness task which the elf will challenge us to do so that we can help to spread the real joy of Christmas. Our first task on Friday was to smile at everyone - free and simple! On Monday 4th, we delivered little treats to staff around the school to say thank you for all their hard work.
If anyone has any achievable kindness task ideas, please feel free to comment below and we will see if the kindness elf would like us to do them!

What have we been up to in 1G this week?

In computing, we have been learning how to code and make objects move in different directions across the screen at the click of a button. We are now at the stage where we can design our own game, choosing our own characters and backgrounds.

In science, we have been studying animal diets. Can any children comment below any animals which are;
 a) carnivores? b) herbivores? or c) omnivores?

Superstar of the week 30/11/17

Our superstar was chosen for giving 100% in her work recently and ensuring all her work is complete without rushing it. Keep it up!

What else have we been up to in 1G?

We have been consolidating our addition and subtraction skills with various matching games and activities.

We have been learning about UK cities and played a game of 'Mapingo' to help us read and remember the names of some. 1G - see if you can tell your parents the names of any cities you can remember?
Can you remember any differences between a town and a city? (Clue: What were you sketching in your Art books?)

In Guided Reading, we continue to develop our phonics and spelling skills by making and sorting  words from stories.

In Literacy, we have been helping the Zoo to find their missing animals by writing 'wanted posters' with lots of information about various animals. We needed to help people look for them so knowing what they look like, what they like to eat and where they live in the wild was helpful. Here are some good examples to read.

I wonder if they will ever get found....!

A pretty sight!

In Science, we have been studying the weather and have kept track of it with a classroom weather chart in the form of a pictogram. Strangely, on Thursday we noticed that we hadn't seen a rainbow (whilst in school) and then suddenly on Friday, we saw a huge, beautiful rainbow right outside our classroom which we had to go outside and admire (even though we did get a bit wet!). We know that rainbows are formed when we have sun and rain at the same time.

Superstar of the week 23/11/17

This superstar was chosen for being extremely helpful and kind, always offering to help others. A lovely quality to have!

Moving Pictures!

In DT, we are learning the different skills to make different types of moving pictures. This week we were making sliding pictures and pivot and lever pictures. Can you see how they work? See if your child can make one at home to show you.

Addition and subtraction number sentences

In maths we have been working on our addition and subtraction skills. In these pictures, the children worked in groups to make addition and subtraction number sentences from the cards.

Giving and Receiving!

In RE we have been thinking about how it feels to give and receive gifts. This is because Christians believe Jesus was a special gift to them from God. We made each other rocket bookmarks last week so that we could give them to our friends to show them how special they are to us. The children said they felt 'proud of their work' and 'happy they made it' which tells us that sometimes the giving is just as important as the receiving!

Superstar of the week 16/11/17

This week our superstar was chosen for good listening and following of instructions. Excellent!

Discovery Time 17/11/17

We are now having Discovery Time every fortnight, adding the total number of marbles over 2 weeks together. This week 1G earned the most marbles in year 1, giving us a winning total of 41 minutes.

We decided to have a crafty animal theme for Discovery Time this week and the children have contributed towards a big display which will go up in the coat peg area.

See the pictures below to see which activities the children chose to do.
